Beechlawn Rovers FC (3)v Beaumont Athletic (1)
07th November 2009
Beechlawn Park
Beechlawn Rovers got their season back on track with a convincing 3-1 victory over mid-table Beaumont on Saturday. The conditions were anything but ideal as the heavy and soggy pitch made sure that everyone had to be careful of their touch on a usually sublime surface.
Having had two men sent off in the previous outing, Rovers mad a few changes to the side. 4 goal hero Damo Murphy moved back into the centre of midfield alongside Orey Roche. Michael McCabe reverted to the right wing with Kev Feeney and Bernt (who had his knob out) Fullam starting up front, both players returning after recent ankle and hamstring injuries.
Despite the heavy conditions both teams started the game brightly, passing the ball along the floor and producing some nice interchanges in the midfield. Rovers should have been ahead early on when Orey Roche swung in a corner to the head of Kev Feeney but his header was just over. Soon after the first goal of the game would come, and against the run of play to Beaumont. An unfortunate slip by Colly Roden allowed the away attacker to get into the box and finish well with what was their first shot on goal in the game.
Rovers didn’t allow the goal to dampen the spirits and they were on the attack straight from the kick off. Damo Murphy and Orey Roche were dominating midfield, breaking up play, passing and supporting the attack at every opportunity. Rovers reward came soon enough when a beautiful defence splitting pass from the centre of midfield released Kev Feeney and after controlling the ball settling himself, he powered the ball past the hapless keeper. Just rewards for their earlier efforts. Beechlawn Rovers kept up the tempo and Kev 'Its Gone Man Its Gone' Feeney could have had himself a hat-trick before have time. First off in what was nearly a carbon copy of his earlier goal, he was released through the middle but this time his shot went over the bar. Soon after Damo Murphy released David Denham down the left wing and his cross to the near post was met by Kev 'Its Gone Man Its Gone' Feeney but again it went agonisingly wide.
Glasnevin’s only change in the game came when Michael McCabe was forced off with only 25 minutes gone after suffering a recurrence of a cruciate ligament injury and double leg break. Eoghan Russell took his place on the right of midfield. And so the sides went off at half time level on goals but with the home side clearly in control of the game. Having found it hard to get into the game on the right hand side, Eoghan Russell was moved up front alongside Kev Feeney with Bernt (who had his knob out) moving into the midfield for the second half.
The second half was more of the same with Rovers having the more of the chances on goal. Beaumont for their part were playing some lovely short passing football but without that killer instinct in the final third. And their lack of firepower up front came to haunt them as Beechlawn Rovers took control of the match. Bernt (who had his knob out) Fullam cut in from the right hand side to slot the ball past the away keeper with a fine finish.
Beaumont responded by changing their system to a 3-4-3. The change resulted in them having a few opportunities on goal but in general Rovers defence held strong against them. When they did manage to get through, they found Beechlawn’s keeper John O'Rourke in fine form also.
Beechlawn Rovers wrapped up the game late on when Eoghan Russell controlled a large clearance up field and turned his man well to race onto goal and slot the ball calmly past the Beaumont keeper for Rovers third of the game.
The away side's heads were down and Beechlawn Rovers should really have added to their tally with Eoghan Russell causing a lot of problems up front but the final ball was just lacking for the home side. In the end it finished 3-1 to Rovers with the home side very happy with the overall display and looking to continue their resurgence in 2 weeks time after the international break.
The win also moves them off the bottom of the table by two places and know if they take advantage of their games in hand they will be in touching distance of the top two.
